How to Hire a Videographer in Louisville: 7 Questions to Ask Before You Book

Hiring a video production company is a bigger decision than most businesses realize — especially when you’re planning a brand film, commercial, or corporate video that will represent your company for the next year or more.

The Louisville and Southern Indiana market has no shortage of people who will show up with a camera. Knowing how to separate the professionals from the hobbyists will save you time, money, and regret.

Here are the seven questions we’d recommend asking any videographer before you book.

1. What does your pre-production process look like?

A professional production company plans before they shoot. Pre-production includes creative brief development, location scouting, shot list and storyboard creation, and scheduling. If a videographer’s answer to this question is “we just show up and capture,” that’s a signal.

2. Do you shoot in LOG format?

LOG is a flat, low-contrast recording format that preserves maximum dynamic range for color grading in post-production. Professionals shoot in LOG. Consumer videographers shoot in standard picture profiles. If they don’t know what LOG is — or they tell you it doesn’t matter — the footage will have limited creative potential in post.

3. Is color grading included?

Color grading is a separate skill from shooting and editing. Ask specifically whether the deliverable includes a professional color grade — not just color correction — and whether it’s handled in DaVinci Resolve or a comparable professional tool.

4. Are you FAA Part 107 certified for drone work?

If your project includes aerial footage, this is non-negotiable. FAA Part 107 certification is required for commercial drone operations in the United States. Ask to see the certificate. If they can’t produce it, don’t proceed.

5. Can I see examples in the style I’m looking for?

A reel is a highlight of best work — not necessarily representative of what they’ll produce for you. Ask to see full films or projects similar to yours in scope, industry, and tone. A commercial for a roofing company and a wedding film require completely different skill sets.

6. Who is actually going to be on set?

Some production companies sell the work with a senior DP and deliver it with a junior shooter. Know who is operating the camera, who is directing, and who is editing your project. Ask by name and review their individual work if possible.

7. What does your post-production timeline look like?

Production is only half the job. Post-production — editing, color grading, sound design, revisions, and delivery — takes time. Get a clear timeline in writing before you sign. Professional companies plan their post schedule as carefully as their shoot schedule.
